Konami is stopping major console game development

In a recent announcement it was disclosed that Konami is stopping major console game development with the exception of next year’s version of PES. Moreover, Julien Merceron, Konami’s technology director is also leaving. Gameblog, a French website was the first to report the rumor and Eurogamer confirmed it.

According to Gameblog, the new Metal Gear title, which was confirmed by Konami in March is not “actually being prepared at any level whatsoever. Not even in pre-production, or in the planning stage. Nothing. It was only against a fire-marketing.”

Earlier this year, alleged problems at Konami started when it was found that Hideo Kojima’s name had been removed from Metal Gear Solid Bundles.

Over the past few years, Pro Evolution Soccer has been profitable for Konami, but their other console games have not been much profitable. It is not overly surprising that Konami is stopping major console game development, if we consider the above facts.

In 2013, Julien Merceron was hired to help supervise the development of the Fox Engine used on Metal Gear Solid V. Now, when Konami is stopping major console game development, it means the Fox engine will be mothballed.

Earlier this year in May, Hideki Hayakawa, Konami president said:

“Our main platforms will be mobiles. Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies. With multiplatform games, there’s really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world.”

Konami is stopping major console game development and it was hinted at the time the company’s president gave the above statements.
