Mastercard Offers Free Tube Travel to Apple Pay Users

Starting today, and on the next three Mondays, MasterCard customers using Apple Pay to touch in and out on London’s public transit network will have up to £27.90 in daily fares refunded by MasterCard.

If you happen to own an Apple Watch, iPhone 6S or iPhone 6S Plus, you’re probably not especially short of cash, but MasterCard and Apple have teamed up to give you free travel on London’s transport services. That’s right, as long as you own a iPhone capable of supporting Apple’s NFC payment service or an Apple Watch with a Mastercard attached, you can commute to work or roam across the capital for nothing.

If you’re an iPhone user that banks with Mastercard, we’ve got some good news for you. This promotion also pretty much lasts for four weeks, which actually started yesterday (Monday in the UK). “What better way to do this, than to offer MasterCard customers using Apple Pay the chance to travel for free over the next four consecutive Mondays”.

You can then tap your iPhone onto bus or tube terminals across London and travel for free, if you fulfil the terms of the promotion.

Mark Barnett, MasterCard UK&I president, highlights that Transport for London’s (TfL) move in 2014 to allow users to pay via contactless devices and cards on London Underground proved to be a “phenomenal catalyst” for the growing popularity of contactless payments in the United Kingdom. “Simply touch in and out using MasterCard with Apple Pay” for the free ride, MasterCard said on its website.
