Nintendo TVii service shutting down in North America on August 11

After one month of releasing Wii U, Nintendo launched The Nintendo TVii service in North America on December 2012. Yesterday, Nintendo announced via Miiverse that Nintendo TVii service in North America will shut down next month.

Those who don’t know about the Nintendo TVii service, basically it allows users to search and watch TV programs on their cable/satellite provider, as well as Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video via the Wii U GamePad’s controller.

The Wii U would then receive details of the program the user is watching, such as screenshots, reviews and real-time stats and information during sporting events.

Users could also post and comment on Twitter or Miiverse regarding the shows, sports plays or awards shows.
Nintendo TVii service was a bit limited in its rollout as it was released for the United States, Canada and Japan users only and was never released for European users.

Yesterday, via Miiverse, Nintendo announced that TVii service would be shut down soon:

“After almost 3 years of finding, watching and engaging with Nintendo TVii, we will be ending the service on August 11, 2015 at 3:00pm PT. At the same time, we will be closing the Nintendo TVii Miiverse community. We sincerely thank you for all of your engagement within the community and the Nintendo TVii service. We look forward to your contributions within our many other Miiverse communities.”

On August 11, a system update will be released for the Wii U, which will remove the Nintendo TVii service functions from the GamePad.
