In the last couple of days, various reports were swirling around the Internet that the next version of Microsoft Edge browser would come with a built-in Ad Blocker.
ZDNet was the first to report this story, when its reporter saw a slide during Microsoft’s Build 2016 developer titled “Microsoft Edge: What’s Next for Microsoft’s New Browser and Web Platform.” In the image below, you can clearly see that point 4 clearly indicates plans to build ad blocking features into the Microsoft’s Edge browser.
But shortly after the report by ZDNet went live; Jacob Rossi, Microsoft Edge engineer Tweeted:
“We are not building a native ad blocker within MS Edge, but we will support third-party ad blockers like AdBlock and AdBlock Plus.”
Microsoft official debunked the report by ZDNet and said that the company was just referencing the fact it is building AdBlock extension support into Edge. It simply means that ad blocking will be coming to Edge, but not built-in.
The Redmond-based company isn’t taking the bold step of offering a built-in Ad Blocking facility in the Edge browser, at least for now.
Even if Microsoft was building a browser with built-in ad block feature, it wouldn’t be the first to do so. Last month, Opera announced that its web browser would get a built-in ad blocker and it would apparently perform 45% faster than other rival browsers like Chrome and Firefox.
If all the popular browsers adopt an ad blocking feature by default, it could spell trouble for online publishers that completely rely on advertising money.
Well, it’s good news for online publishers that Microsoft Edge Browser isn’t coming with built-in ad blocker. But, they need to think about their future plans of earning money as more people have started using ad blocking software and extensions.
