Microsoft has cancelled its Project Spark half-game, half-platform, which allowed the buyers to create their own games within one big sandbox.

The company has already pulled out the game from its online stores, making it no longer available for download on PC or Xbox One.

Microsoft has announced that Project Spark’s servers will shut down on August 12th, thus removing access to the online features of the game.

Therefore, the players have some time till August 12th to download any user-generated content they wish to keep as well as any of their own uploads (as memories) that haven’t been saved locally.

Also, if you’ve purchased the retail version of Project Spark’s starter kit, then you’ll automatically receive a credit to your Microsoft account.

And those who had redeemed a code between October 5th, 2015 and before May 13th, 2016 will receive a different credit, which will be usable on the Xbox or Windows store. The credit will be granted automatically.

Refreshing Some Memories

Project Spark was first launched in March 2014. It utilized additional content sold as micro-transactions, but afterwards in October 2015 went to a free-to-play model.

The game launched into open beta in December 2013 and saw new assets continually added over 46 content packs. It even featured its own Conker the squirrel game, which encouraged the players to create their own levels.

What has Community Manager Thomas Gratz to say about it?

Thomas Gratz noted in the announcement that shutting down Project Spark was a difficult decision. However, active development had already ended last fall, when it was revealed that no future DLC would be released.

Fortunately, the team behind the game has already been moved to the other projects at Microsoft, so that there won’t be any layoffs.
