The Large Hadron Collider is back in Business

Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

The LHC was not operational for the last 2 years and has started for the first time since 2013. The collisions will not start for another month but the protons are now circling around the 27k long machine in both directions.

Researchers are hopeful to discover new phases of physics beyond what they have seen before. Rolf Heuer, the director-general of Cern thanked everyone for the team’s hard work and further said that the hard work is just about to start.

Now scientists are looking to increase the amount of energy of the beams, there was an electrical fault which is now resolved so the beams will start working from next week.

The LHC will start at a lower energy setting but the energy level will be increased in the next few months. The Engineers at LHC will increase the energy gradually; 2 years ago the LHC was running 6.5 trillion electronvolts, now they will gradually increase it to 13 trillion electron volts.

The team has already witnessed splashes of particles, happens when protons hits a shutter which is used to keep the beam in line. The team thinks that it’s amazing that they have started after a two year gap and are eager to see what the LHC can do in terms of Physics.
