After the group calling feature, Facebook is now trying to encourage more people to go out and find groups to participate in, with its new feature.

But right now it is testing the feature for a random subset of its users. And if you’re one of the lucky few, who are selected to participate, then you’ll see the option within Facebook’s Groups section.

You’ll be able to browse public and closed Facebook Groups by category, including the local Groups and Groups your friends are in. With this, you can also see what’s gaining traction in your circle and city.

Does it offer new categories?

Facebook’s new ‘Discover’ feature offers 25 different categories such as:

• Parenting
• Sports
• Food
• Buying & Selling
• Networking
• Animals & Pets
• Hobby & Leisure
• Support & Comfort
• Travel. etc

Each topic page highlights the top suggested Groups based on their popularity and if you already know it’s member.

And yes, don’t expect any drug dealing category to appear in your search because this network works to shut down any kind of illicit group behavior.

On what basis does it suggest new groups?

Facebook’s new ‘Discover’ feature pulls from your geographic area, your interest and those of your friends to suggest you new Groups.

And the suggestions are remarkably great.

But if Facebook fails at finding groups of your interest, then you can go the manual approach and find groups using its 25 pre-selected topics.

You can find this new option under Facebook’s “More” tab on your smartphone.

Right now, only the users in U.S. has access to this feature, but the company will roll out this option more widely soon. So, don’t fret if you don’t have access to it yet.

However, it’s a surprise that Facebook has taken this long to roll out something like this.

But the effort makes sense as it’s not like Instagram and Twitter’s new discovery efforts.
