Google Project Loon in Sri Lanka will work to completely cover the nation with Internet coverage

Google has signed its first deal with the Sri Lankan government to give the entire country internet access from hi-tech helium-filled balloons. Google Project Loon in Sri Lanka will work to completely cover the nation with internet coverage.

Foreign minister of Sri Lanka Mangala Samaraweera said officials have signed deal with Google in Colombo to launch the high-tech, helium filled balloons above the Indian Ocean Island in the coming months.

Google Project Loon was launched in the year 2013 with an aim to encompass the Earth with a chain of helium-filled balloons floating high in the atmosphere, which will link with each other to form a network that can give internet access to remote areas.

If Google Project Loon in Sri Lanka is successful, then the country will become the first to get complete internet coverage.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera gave a statement regarding Google Project Loon in Sri Lanka:

“The entire Sri Lankan island – every village from (southern) Dondra to (northern) Point Pedro – will be covered with affordable high speed Internet using Google Loon’s balloon technology.”

Sri Lankan officials said to reduce the operational costs, local Internet service providers will also have access to the balloons. Muhunthan Canagey, head of the Information and Communication Technology Agency, said it is expected that Google will finish sending up the balloons by next year.

Canagey told AFP “Service providers will be able to access higher speeds and improve the quality of their existing service once the balloon project is up and running.” He also said that the prices of using the service may also be reduced.

Google Project Loon in Sri Lanka will provide 3G speeds, so this is not a network that will allow for heavy bandwidth usage. Since only 3 million of Sri Lanka’s 20 million citizens have internet access, so this project by search giant will change things to a great extent.
