Skype for web (beta) is now available worldwide, earlier this month it was launched in the U.K. and U.S. Users can now make calls on Skype directly from the web without app installation, but users will still need to install a plug-in for making calls like in hangouts.

To make calls on Skype directly from the web users just need to go to Skype.com or web.skype.com and log in. According to the blog post by Skype, Skype for Web will also offer notifications to the users so that they don’t miss instant incoming audio or video calls and text messages. It also offers pop up desktop notifications that can be enabled by signing in.

Skype for web will support many languages, including “Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese Simplified and Chinese Traditional languages, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, Spanish, Estonian, Finnish, French, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian apart from the existing English and Hindi.”

Skype’s move to let users make calls on Skype directly from the web is to move real-time communication out of the territory of apps and programs onto the web. Google Hangouts has also been providing browser based text, phone and video chats for a while.

“Contacts and conversations get synced between the Smartphone and desktop client, whereas Skype for the web will be combining the two categories in a single timeline view,” according to Skype.

Skype announced on a blog post that “Skype for Web will also support Chromebook and Linux users: you can now access Skype for Web (Beta) for instant messaging,” Linux and Chromebook users were earlier not able to use the instant messenger service on Skype for Web.
